Together with the owners of our 2012 'Slipper aspirants, we were elated to have two of our 'babies' make the final field of 16 for the world's richest 2-year-old race. Sydney's weather (at last) was perfect and connections of both Driefontein and Raceway were delighted that their youngsters were there. What a day it was! A huge crowd....with Gai having done a remarkable job to qualify 5 runners for the race. Second favourite Pierro, trained by Gai, won the day, with our Star runners Raceway running 5th and Driefontein, having missed the start, dramatically running an amazing 6th. Her final 800 metres was the fastest of the race. She has now earned $1.4 million after 5 starts..... not bad for a $75,000 purchase at the Magic Millions sales. Raceway's 5th saw him add another $130,000 to his career earnings, with certainly much more to come. All in all, a hugely exciting day for the Gai Waterhouse team, with Star owners right in the thick of it.
A big thank you to our owners who sent such wonderful congratulatory notes this weekend, a selection of which are included below: Dear Gai and Denise, Jan and I would like to Thank You and your staff for all your efforts, in particular over the last few weeks leading up to the Golden Slipper. The last 12 months has been way beyond our expectations and proof that dreams can come true. The efforts of our filly Driefontein have been outstanding and without your assistance we would not have experienced the journey we have so far. We would like to acknowledge the consideration, hospitality and fellowship that you provide us as owners. We love being part of the Star Thorougbreds family. We look forward to the return of our filly in the spring after a well earned rest. Thank You once again. Kind Regards Chris & Jan Tohl Dear Denise & Team Hope you are able to relax a little after a big weekend. What a wonderful achievement having your two wonderful runners in the slipper, though we all like to win, we think they did you proud with their wonderful gutsy runs and you should feel proud. Congratulations to you and you connections, you have some real thrills still to come, how about that time Driefontein made in the run home! I listened to the race on the way down to the ballet which I'd already had my season ticket for as my twin sister is an addict with her ballet, I go along to support her and it's so nice to share time together, it's a shame it fell on slipper day! I even wore a touch of purple for you! No doubt at some stage you celebrated with Gai and all, the Martin and Waterhouse team are factored together as something special. (Bet Gai wouldn't have been able to say factored at the end of the celebrations). I'd like to send her a congrats note but I'm sure she's already bombarded with plenty. For now, we'll leave you to it and talk soon. Kind Regards Gai and Lyle |
