|We remember the Saturday night session of the 2016 Magic Millions sale very well; the lovely grey Sebring colt was a real eye catcher, but most likely out of our price range. Yearling selector and sale advisor Steve Brem was also a fan of the colt as we had inspected him before he went through the ring 3 or 4 times. By Saturday afternoon we had decided that we definitely wanted the colt even if it meant going way "out of our comfort zone". The bidding was strong and from the outset we knew the colt would be the most expensive yearling we'd ever bought...if of course we could buy him. That we did! At $300,000 he was a record price for Star, but now as a 3 year old named ASTERIUS, he's starting to show us the talent we had hoped he could produce when we first saw him. |
On Saturday with Brenton Avdulla aboard at Rosehill Gardens, the 3 year old displayed his capacity to find the line in great style after languishing at the tail of the field for the first three quarters of the 1,500 metres event. When he found clear running in the straight, the big striding ASTERIUS "picked up" sharply and overpowered his rivals to win going away. He looks well capable of racing over 2,000 metres at least and as our trainer says, "he's a horse with the X factor about him". Hopefully the gelding continues to charge through his grades, enabling him to reach a considerably higher level of racing through the spring and beyond. For a few moments the race looked as though it could be a Star quinella with GRESHAM our other talented Sebring 3 year old, taking the lead before the line only to be caught late. He ran a terrific race under his big weight to run 3rd beaten 0.1 for second place and has enjoyed an excellent preparation this time in training.
Congratulations to the winning ASTERIUS owners Paramount Racing (Manager: Kathryn Wood), Appleroth Family (Manager: Valerie Appleroth), P & S Glenney and S McKee Racing (Manager: Patti Glenney), Felgate Holdings (Manager: Paul Felgate), David McLeish, Maureen McLeish, Ray Aurisch, Helen Aurisch, Boeara Holdings (Manager: Denise Dunphy), John Saunders.
