|It was another impressive riding display by young New Zealand apprentice Sam Weatherley on Wednesday at Canterbury Park, when winning over 1,900 metres on 5 year old TRAFALGAR. The gelding returned to racing recently following a long time away from the track and it was an excellent training performance by Chris Waller and his team to have the gelding back in the winner's circle third up over a distance preferred by TRAFALGAR. |
The gelding jumped in the air as the barriers opened and so Sam was required to settle him towards the rear of the field as they sorted themselves out in the running passing the winning post, the first time round. As the field travelled down the back of the track Sam began to improve on the gelding hugging the rail throughout. Into the home straight and it appeared that TRAFALGAR would be right in the finish, however the decision by his rider not to ease and go around the horse on his outside at the 200 metres mark, but rather to go through the gap which opened meant that the gelding could surge late to win in good style. No question the ride by Sam Weatherly won the race. It was a great thrill for his owners to have TRAFALGAR back to the winner's circle following wonderful training and management by Chris Waller and his team, brilliant care of the gelding by stable vet Dr Ross Alexander and as always superb care over an extended period by the team at Muskoka Farm.
The son of the late Hinchinbrook was a 2014 Magic Millions yearling purchase from the draft of Yarraman Stud. His win on Wednesday was his fourth career victory and it would suggest there may well be more in store for him now that he has returned to racing in terrific form. TRAFALGAR is appropriately named as Hinchinbrook was was one of English naval commander Lord Nelson's ships and the commander's final battle was the Battle of Trafalgar.
